T-Systems and GEA win contract for satellite-based truck tolling system in Alsace
)
The system will support the region’s forthcoming distance-based eco-tax for heavy goods vehicles weighing 3.5 tonnes or more.
Commissioned by the European Community of Alsace (Collectivité Européenne d’Alsace, CEA), the project will span an initial term of eight and a half years, with the option to extend for an additional three years.
The system will cover the north-south corridor of the region and integrate with the European Electronic Toll Service (EETS), enabling cross-border operability for logistics firms.
Vehicles equipped with EETS-compatible on-board units will be able to continue travel uninterrupted, while unregistered vehicles will be able to purchase e-tickets online.
A dedicated operating company, R-PASS Opérateur, has been established in Strasbourg to run the system, with T-Systems holding an 85% stake and GEA 15%.
T-Systems is responsible for the end-to-end tolling solution, including satellite-based vehicle positioning, movement data allocation, invoicing, customer support and contract management.
GEA will manage roadside infrastructure such as control bridges and mobile enforcement points.
“This project allows us to set new technological benchmarks in Europe,” said Christoph Ahrendt, member of the T-Systems management board.
“Its modular architecture enables seamless expansion to new toll domains and reinforces our growth strategy in international tolling markets.”
