Switzerland awards contract for national truck tolling system

Switzerland awards contract for national truck tolling system
The Swiss Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG) has awarded a contract to a joint venture between Swiss company LOSTnFOUND AG – part of AddSecure – and Kapsch TrafficCom to supply hardware and services for a national truck tolling system.

The financial scope of the contract totals around €54m (£46m) and covers a term of eight years, with an optional two-year extension. The project involves customer service, vehicle equipment and data collection for HGVs weighing more than 3.5 tonnes.

It includes the delivery of the global navigation satellite system (GNSS)-capable on-board units (OBUs) for the vehicles subject to toll collection, the recording of the GPS data registered by the units, their transmission to the federal office responsible for toll collection, as well as customer service.

Michael Weber, head of sales EMENA at Kapsch TrafficCom, said: “We are delighted to make a key contribution to the modernisation of the Swiss toll collection system with our hardware and software.

“In addition, our OBU is certified in accordance with the EU Taxonomy Regulation on climate change.”

For equipping trucks weighing more than 3.5 tones with the GNSS on-board unit, the OBU itself and basic processes such as vehicle registration, delivery and repair of the units are provided.

The OBU determines the waypoints using GNSS localisation, records trailer parameters and total weight and transmits the driving data via the mobile communications network to the back office/IT system of the joint venture provider, where the journey data is processed and then transferred to BAZG.

Customer service includes an online service portal that supports the administration of the vehicles in the system. Orders, fault reports and the replacement of OBUs can be placed in German, French, Italian and English via the service portal.
