Sweden’s Tingstad tunnel reopens following technical renovation

Multinational public infrastructure management company SICE has announced the completion of the technological renovation of Sweden’s Tingstad tunnel in Gothenburg.

SICE was appointed by the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) in 2021 to upgrade the tunnel. The 455m-long tunnel originally opened to traffic in 1968 and, up to the day the renovation works commenced, approximately 120,000 vehicles travelled daily along its road.

According to SICE, a major complexity of the renovation project concerned the tunnel’s geographical location along the E6 road, which makes Tingstad one of the highest trafficked tunnels in Sweden.

Throughout the project, SICE was responsible for the design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning works of the electrical, mechanical and automation systems in both tunnel tubes.

With the tunnel having officially reopened to traffic in May 2024, SICE will remain in situ for maintenance activities until the end of the year.
