Q-Free selected for North Carolina’s I-485 express lane project

The North Carolina Turnpike Authority (NCTA) has selected Q-Free’s Intrada Synergy Server to handle license plate-based video toll transactions for the I-485 express lane roadside toll collection system (RTCS) project.

The project, led by Indra, aims to enhance traffic flow and travel reliability in Charlotte’s critical transportation corridor, which experiences daily vehicle counts ranging between 72,400 and 118,400. The I-485 express lanes, stretching between I-77 and US74, will employ advanced technologies such as 3D lidar and artificial intelligence for dynamic pricing and toll collection.

The Intrada Synergy Server will convert license-plate images into data, ensuring efficient and accurate toll processing. Marco Sinnema, VP of image review solutions at Q-Free, said: “By leveraging Q-Free’s innovative technology, we aim to enhance operational efficiency, minimise revenue loss, and ultimately improve the commuting experience for residents and visitors in the Charlotte area.”
