Gothenburg’s congestion charging system nears completion
The multi-lane free-flow toll system‘s rollout and testing phases are now complete, with updated charging and control points covering all tolled passages within Gothenburg.
The coverage will process more than 150 million vehicle passages annually, designed to ensure seamless automatic vehicle identification and improved traffic flow management across the city’s central zones.
The project involved a full replacement of existing charging infrastructure, with installations carried out during off-peak hours, such as nights, weekends, and bank holidays, to minimise disruption.
Each charging point features advanced portals equipped with cameras and technical components essential for efficient congestion monitoring and toll collection.
Upon entering the operational phase, the system will be managed for the next decade, with an optional two-year extension, ensuring its sustained functionality and adaptability to evolving urban mobility needs.
