Electronic tolling to be rolled out in Zimbabwe this year

The Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara) has announced plans to introduce e-tolling within the year.

Aiming to enhance efficiency, convenience for motorists, and reduce operational costs, the cashless system will utilise card facilities or e-tags, eliminating the need for vehicles to stop at toll gates. Additionally, three tollgates will be upgraded to toll plazas to further ease congestion and improve revenue collection.

The move is part of Zinara’s efforts to modernise its operations and address the country’s road infrastructure maintenance gap. The first pilot project is expected to commence before the end of June this year. In related news, Zinara’s revenue operations director, Patience Shuro, has been confirmed as a speaker at Road User Charging Conference Middle East & Africa 2024.

Shuro will discuss the dynamics of tolling in Zimbabwe, including an overview of Zimbabwe’s road-tolling system, the use of toll funds to alleviate traffic congestion and the impact of road-user fees on the country’s road infrastructure network.
